Choosing a ballet school

Posted by Types of Hobbies Advisor on Monday, October 20th, 2008

A Ballet school is very important in helping you reach your goal as a good Ballet dancer. This is because the school can provide you not only facilities needed for the training and practice but can also provide you with almost everything you need to learn about the dance.

Since Ballet has a long tradition of excellence and popularity, more and more people even kids at tender ages enroll to Ballet schools to improve and enhance their innate talent. If you are a parent who wants to enroll your child in a Ballet school, you should be very meticulous about the school because it concerns not only the enhancement of your child’s skills and talents but his or her safety as well.

Ballet school checklist

The major consideration for choosing a Ballet school is quality of the training it offers. You can do research about the top quality schools in your country because this can give you an idea what are the institutions that you can consider. In each country, there are at least one or two premiere Ballet schools. But if you prefer the best international school for Ballet, consider Russian Schools of the Kirov Ballet Company located in St. Petersburg as well as the Bolshoi Ballet Company in Moscow both in Russia, the School of American Ballet located in New York City, USA, the Royal Ballet School, and the Rambert School of Ballet both found in London. Before enrolling, take time to consider the school’s history and the quality of graduates it was able to produce through the years.

Aside from the quality of training and the overall reputation of the school, you should also consider the facilities it offers. An ideal Ballet school should have spacious sprung wooden floors that have proper dance surface to avoid injuries, large mirrors to monitor the steps of the students, barres or the fixed wooden rails that are attached wall and live musical accompaniment because the dance itself is greatly dependent on music. Always make sure that the overall environment is safe and conducive to learning before finally enrolling.

The teachers’ qualification is also a major consideration when choosing a Ballet school because an incompetent mentor can cause physical injuries due to lack of proper knowledge. You can request for the credentials of the mentor so you can assess if he or she is fit to teach Ballet.

Proximity is another important factor because it can affect the consistency of the student in attending classes. Try to look for reputable Ballet schools that are close to your workplace or near your house so you can attend your classes without being late. For parents, Ballet schools near the schools where their child takes regular classes are ideal to save time in picking up the child after classes.

Other considerations in choosing a Ballet school also include the tuition fee, the uniformity of grading system and standard of examinations, and the maximum number of students per class.
